Meet The Westover Wolfhounds

It’s a tremendous pleasure and privilege to be able to share our life with this majestic breed. Our Irish Wolfhounds are treated as part of our family and we all spend our days and nights together. We do not believe in Kenneling them, as that would keep them away from us most of the time. We feel that it’s important to have our wolfhounds with us as much as possible to insure their mental and behavioral stability, growth and easy going temperament.

Our Irish Wolfhounds require a tremendous amount of physical activity to keep them fit and healthy, but that doesn’t mean that they should be a dog that lives outside their entire life. We have found that their favorite place is right by our side, lap, bed, couch, kitchen floor, bathroom and basically anywhere we are. They are truly gentle giants.

Socializing our Irish Wolfhounds is also incredibly important to us, not only in the home with our family and other pets, but taking them on regular outings to the park, market, restaurants and events, as this has become a crucial part of their development as good canine citizens.

Our Irish Wolfhounds are very social and they love to meet new people. To start their social encounters and interactions as early as possible, we take them with us to as many different situations and places that we can.

Our Irish Wolfhounds are a very large and very powerful, even during playtime you could get accidentally pushed over. We work with our Irish Wolfhounds at an early age to make sure they respect our space and are mindful of their actions.

All of this “home” training and socializing prepares them for what they love to do best and that is to hunt. If we didn’t have the ability to “recall” them (call them back to us), or trust them with non-hunting dogs and pets, we could never let them loose during hunting.

There is a time and place for everything and when we hunt our Irish Wolfhounds they need to be under control, rather than letting them chase anything that runs, such as house dogs, cats and of course our neighbors small children. That’s why we find socializing so important. Our Irish Wolfhounds are a wonderful and tremendous responsibility and we feel that with the proper training they are smart enough to not only differentiate between being a pet but also being efficient in the hunt field.
